recommended resources
Watch this site for the addition of a blog. Till then, here are some of the best things I’ve found on leadership and management. If you’re aware of a great resource not listed here, please let me know.
BOOKS:
First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman
Changing the way we think about management, this book is a must read for anyone who supervises people, whether paid staff or volunteers.
12: The Elements of Great Managing by Rodd Wagner and James K. Harter
This book is the follow-up to First, Break All the Rules. It takes each of the 12 areas and looks at them in depth.
The Leadership Pipeline: How to Build the Leadership Powered Company by Ram Charan, Stephen Drotter, and James Noel
If more people would read this book, less people would end up promoted to their level of incompetence. This lays out the skills and values people need in order to be prepared for and successful at each rung of the leadership ladder.
The Making of a Leader by J Robert Clinton
Although this is an older book (published in 1988), it’s still a great one. One of the few books to look at leadership development in terms of character and the passages of life leaders go through at each stage in their development.
The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything
by Guy Kawasaki
The title says it all. If you’re thinking of starting something, reading this book will help.
WEBSITES AND BLOGS:
I’m still looking for a good site on leadership and management. Let me know if there’s something out there.
Here are some that have been helpful to me, though the focus is somewhat different:
Guy Kawasaki
Guy’s blog is often funny, usually helpful, and updated regularly.
Seth Godin
Seth, of course, is one of the leading voices on marketing. He usually has several posts a day (I don’t know how he manages) and they’re often thought-provoking and helpful.
Christopher Hansen
This is the site for Christopher Hansen, who designed my site. He’s a great guy who does great work and is great to work with – a combination that’s all too rare in this world.
